How to write AI image prompts that look real

How do you make AI images look realistic?

Realistic AI images come from specific prompts, not lucky ones. Describe the subject, the exact lighting, the camera and lens feel, and the imperfections of a real photo. Then generate several versions and keep only the ones where hands, text and shadows survive inspection.

Why AI images look fake

  • Skin that is too smooth, with no pores or texture.
  • Lighting that comes from nowhere, with shadows that disagree.
  • Text on signs, labels and clothing that is almost right but not readable.
  • Hands, teeth and jewellery that melt on close inspection.
  • A background that is suspiciously clean and empty.

The prompt structure that works

  1. 1. Name the subject plainly

Who or what, wearing what, doing what. One subject per image keeps the model focused.

  2. 2. Set the light

Light is what makes a photo believable. Say where it comes from: soft window light from the left, harsh midday sun, warm bulb light indoors.

  3. 3. Borrow camera language

Words like 50mm lens, shallow depth of field and slightly grainy phone photo push the model toward real photography instead of illustration.

  4. 4. Add imperfection on purpose

A creased shirt, an uneven table, a busy market background. Real scenes are messy; sterile scenes read as AI immediately.

  5. 5. Generate in batches and reject fast

Keep one in four at most. Zoom into hands and text before you keep anything.

A reusable example

A young Nigerian woman in a green ankara dress arranges tomatoes at a market stall, candid phone photo, harsh midday sun with hard shadows, slightly grainy, busy market background with blurred shoppers, natural skin texture.

Notice what is missing: no request for perfection, no beauty words, no fantasy lighting. Realism comes from ordinary details stated clearly.

Questions people ask

Which tool gives the most realistic images?

The leading image models all produce realistic results with a specific prompt. The prompt structure matters more than the tool, so learn the structure once and apply it anywhere.

Can I use AI images for client work?

Yes, where the tool's licence allows commercial use. Check the licence of the tool you used before delivering paid work, and never present an AI image as a real photo of a real person.
